Nervous, anxious or worried about dental treatment?

We understand that many people are apprehensive about dental treatment. Some people fear the sound of the drill or injections in the mouth whilst others have an unspecific fear that can’t be explained. This is very common. We can help.

At Passage House Dental Care, Dr Adam Gardiner has a special interest in helping patients with anxiety to dental treatment. They are pleased to offer conscious sedation, which reduces anxiety levels and ensures a positive dental experience.

About Dr Adam Gardiner

Dr Adam Gardiner is one of our full time, experienced dentists at Passage House and has a special interest in Conscious Sedation. He has a calm, professional, efficient and friendly manner that will put you at ease even before sedation. A dental nurse will always be with you and the dentist throughout the procedure.

What does Conscious Sedation involve and what is it like?

Conscious sedation involves administering a drug before dental treatment, which induces a state of relaxation and relieves anxiety.

You will not be fully aware of what is going on around you although you will still be able to communicate with the dentist and dental nurse. The drug also has an amnesic effect meaning you will remember none or very little of the procedure and as a result time will appear to pass very quickly.

You will not be unconscious as with a general anaesthetic, but some people do ‘drift off’ as they are so relaxed. Even the most phobic of patients are amazed by the treatment they can undergo when sedated in this way.

The recovery time with sedation is very quick. You should not feel sick afterwards. It is essential that you come with an escort to enable you to return home safely after your treatment, as you may feel drowsy for a few hours.

What treatments can I have sedation for?

Sedation is available for most forms of dental treatment including fillings and extractions.

Do I have to be a patient at Passage House?

No. Your own dentist can refer you to Passage House Dental Care for your treatment to be carried out under conscious sedation, or you can refer yourself by calling our reception to find out more.

Conscious Sedation, Patient comment:

I had been putting off having a tooth removed for nearly four years but plucked up the courage to make an appointment as I couldn’t put up with the pain any longer.

All I remember was having a small injection in the back of my hand, the next thing I knew I was getting back into my car with my mum after having my tooth taken out.

I really couldn’t remember anything about the treatment.  I felt so pleased with myself as I’d put this off for so long.

The team were so friendly and professional and put me completely at ease.  Many thanks.
