Hygienist

Why have a Hygienist Appointment?

Our Hygienist’s main work is to prevent and treat gum disease including professionally cleaning your teeth. This is usually called ‘scaling and polishing’. However, perhaps her most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth free of plaque.

Plaque is a sticky coating that forms constantly on your teeth. If it is not brushed away properly, this hardens to form tartar (Calculus), which you cannot remove yourself. Removal of Tartar will go a long way towards preventing or slowing the progress of gum disease. They also give advice on preventing dental decay. The hygienist will work alongside your dentist to give you care that is tailored to your needs. If you have been referred to our hygienist by your dentist then it means that the treatment you get from our Hygienist is very important for your dental care and appointments should be kept.

Why is this Dental Treatment Important?

Regular professional cleaning, combined with looking after your teeth and gums well at home, will help keep your mouth healthy. A clean and healthy mouth will improve your appearance, help you to keep your teeth, give you fresher breath, and help to maintain your general health.

What about Smoking?

Our Hygienist may suggest you give up smoking. This will reduce staining and improve your general health. Research has also shown that smokers have more gum disease and lose more teeth than non-smokers.

Will the Treatment Hurt?

Scaling and polishing is usually pain free. However, if you do have any discomfort, let our Hygienist know.

What Can You do to Help?

You can look after your teeth and gums between visits. Products that help clean in-between your teeth (interdentally), such as interdental brushes and floss are sold at reception so don’t forget to get everything you need whilst you are at the practice.

We recommend you follow three simple steps to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

  1. brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.
  2. cut down how often you have sugary foods and drinks
  3. visit your dentist regularly, as often as recommended and remember your hygienist appointments!
